The clients had recently moved into this gorgeous converted barn on the outskirts of the Chilterns town of Amersham, with views out to the surrounding countryside. The garden, whilst large, was a large blank expanse of lawn with very visible boundary fences and a summerhouse. Their planned building work was about to remove their paved seating area just outside the back doors. Whilst work was underway on their new kitchen dining room extension, they approached Chiltern Garden Design to consider the views out from the house and briefed us to create a redesigned garden that needed to provide a generous seating area, lawn, interesting planting, a hard standing route to the summerhouse, and space for a kitchen garden. We came up with a garden design based on the intersection between two circles of lawn which form the main thrust of the space. These cleverly serve to make the garden feel wider than it is, guiding the eye restlessly from one side to the other, to enjoy the vibrant planting borders. More recently the raised pond has been completed, adding an additional point of interest close to the dining terrace and enjoyable from the windows of the clients’ home office space. It features a selection of aquatic plants to suit the environment and with flowers and foliage to delight the senses. The clients are delighted with the transformation, and have joyously taken to planting and harvesting fresh fruit and vegetables from the raised beds at the end of the garden too.
