Entertaining Garden Amersham
A stylish revamp of a large back garden in a contemporary style, full of zing and colour.
Chiltern Garden Design was asked to redesign both the front and rear gardens at this large Arts and Crafts Style house in Amersham, which had already been extended with two sets of bi-fold doors opening out onto the garden, creating a very contemporary feel in contrast with the original traditionally styled frontage.
The clients were unhappy with the existing paving, which had been poorly laid, and wanted to update the garden to create two new entertaining areas, one for cooking and dining under cover, the other for lounging in the sun. They were also keen to have lots of exciting planting with seasonal dynamism to be enjoyed from inside and outside throughout the year.
The design solution includes a raised composite deck, bio-climatic pergola with integrated heating and lighting, a granite-topped outdoor kitchen with Sub-Zero Wolf barbecue rotisserie grill and Pizza oven. Steps lead down from here to the new lounging area, centred around a gas fire table. The garden has been extensively planted with a zingy scheme of deep pinks, purples and zesty lime greens, incorporating old favourites such as roses, salvias and peonies in a modern scheme softened by swaying ornamental grasses.
The front garden, in a more traditional style to match the house frontage, is to be enhanced with new trees and planting in a warm colour scheme of oranges, yellows and whites, as well as incorporating new vehicular gates and a beautiful Victorian style Alitex greenhouse.
A full lighting design allows the garden to be enjoyed even as dusk falls and its structure to be appreciated into the winter, whilst irrigation helps the garden to establish well and eases the maintenance burden.
This garden was featured in Dream Garden Magazine (front cover & feature April 2022) and stars in the spring 2024 TV ad for London Stone.
