Historic Windmill Garden

Garden for a Grade II Listed Windmill in Croxley Green

The owners of this historic Grade II listed windmill asked Chiltern Garden Design to redesign the wraparound gardens. Their priorities were to create safe and engaging play areas for their young son and his friends, stylish spaces for adult entertaining, and a beautifully planted front garden. The goal was a garden that could be enjoyed by family and friends throughout the seasons.

The front garden is the suntrap, secluded from the street with mature trees, and most suited to entertaining. The clients requested a covered cooking and dining area, water feature, space for lounging and an immersive beautifully planted garden to stroll through.

At the side, the shady aspect has been maximised, turning it into an adventure garden to be enjoyed by little ones, featuring a raised trackway for scooters amongst ferns and japanese maples, with a living willow tunnel to add to the sense of adventure.

The rear lawn is open for play, with an existing summerhouse turned into a messy play room with lounging deck for family time together in the dappled shade of the existing silver maple, to which we proposed adding a rope and timber swing.

Broken hedges keep balls out of planting, and from the jewel studded meadow that loosely surrounds the existing well.

The concept and detailed designs are now complete and we are hoping that they will be installed in the very near future.
